Community Recreation Therapy for Individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities

*This course has been pre-approved by OAPHERD for 5 clock hours.

This course provides an overview of Recreation Therapy modalities that can be used to assist other professionals in community-based service settings, specifically geared towards individuals living with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The course includes the need for community-based recreation therapy, and reviews the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation process of 5 common RT interventions geared towards children and adults living with I/DD. At the completion of this course, participants will need to pass an exam with a minimum score of 80%. Participants must complete the course within 365 days of starting the course to receive a completion certificate.

Course Objectives

  • Learner will be able to identify and describe at least 3 Intellectual & Developmental disabilities.

  • Learner will be able to identify 5 RT modalities appropriate for individuals with I/DD in community-based service settings.

  • Learner will be able to identify at least 1 assessment measure to utilize pre- and post- program.

  • Learner will be able to identify at least 3 pieces of adaptive equipment and/or safety considerations to utilize during the implementation process of a program.

Instructor Bio:

Jennifer Bell is a nationally certified therapeutic recreation specialist, NC licensed recreation therapist, and nationally certified inclusive fitness trainer. Devoting her professional career to children and adults living with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD), Jennifer has worked in community-based adapted sports, behavioral health, and long-term care service settings. Jennifer is currently serving as a Tailored Care Manager in NC at Trillium Health Resources linking those living with I/DD to health care, home and community based services, and community resources.
