Introduction to Adaptive Skiing

This course is an overview of adaptive skiing and provides education on different aspects or ‘disciplines’ of adaptive alpine skiing. Each discipline is designed in groups to meet the challenges of skiers and their various abilities. Adaptive skiing has specialized equipment for each discipline, for individuals of different ages and all ability levels. Learners will be introduced to the adaptive equipment used in alpine skiing, student assessments, teaching techniques, barriers to participation, treatment goals for positive outcomes and information for professionals to provide services. At the completion of this course, participants will need to pass an exam with a minimum score of 80%. Participants must complete the course within 365 days of starting the course to receive a completion certificate.

Course Objectives

  • Identify at least five benefits of adaptive skiing.

  • Identify barriers to adaptive skiing and ways to assist participants in overcoming.

  • Name four ways to assess a student coming into an adaptive ski program and develop goals for positive outcomes.

  • Identify the six different disciplines that encompass adaptive skiing, teaching considerations and the adaptive equipment used.

  • Learn at least one way to get involved as a professional.

Instructor Bio:

Diana is the owner & Founder of Your Adventure Rx offering outdoor therapeutic recreation based in Bozeman, Montana. She has planned and led outdoor programs for many national adaptive sports organizations such as Eagle Mount, Disable Sports Eastern Sierra and Telluride Adaptive programs and planned multi-day adventure program for large corporations including Altria. For 15 years she’s been practicing recreation therapy and lives, works and plays in the outdoors. Her other certifications include: Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) in alpine and adaptive ski teaching and in Wilderness First Aid (WFA) through the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS).
