Mindfulness: What is it and how can it be used by the TR & HPERD professional?

*This course has been pre-approved by OAHPERD for 5 clock hours.

This session will discuss the concept of mindfulness and how it can be applied by TR & HPERD professionals. Background related to the history of mindfulness and its roots in Dialectical Behavior Therapy will be discussed. Interventions that can be utilized by the learner, both personally and professionally, are included. The Learner must pass a quiz at the end of the course with at least a 80% in order to be awarded a completion certificate. The course must be completed within 365 days of start date.

Course Objectives

  • By the end of this course, the participant will be able to identify the three mind states taught through mindfulness.

  • By the end of this course, the participant will be able to identify the difference between “what” skills and “how” skills developed through mindfulness.

  • By the end of this course, the participant will be able to identify a minimum of five interventions that can be utilized by the professional to teach and practice mindfulness.

Instructor Bio:

Valerie is a graduate of The University of Toledo and has been a CTRS since 2008. In 2007 she earned a Bachelors of Science in Recreational Therapy and continued her education in 2008 with a Masters of Arts degree in Recreation Administration. She started her career at The University of Toledo Medical Center working on both the geriatric psychiatry and physical rehabilitation units. In 2012 she moved to Columbus, Ohio where she worked as a contingent staff member at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Additionally, she been a part-time faculty member via distance learning for The University of Toledo School of Exercise Rehab Sciences. Currently Valerie is employed full-time at Nationwide Children’s Hospital with a focus on the inpatient child and adolescent psychiatry unit. She has given many presentations over the years at conferences such as The University of Toledo Recreational Therapy Club Conference, Nationwide Children Hospital’s Therapeutic Recreation Fall Conference, the American Therapeutic Recreation Association Annual Conference, and The Ohio Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance State Convention. Valerie is a current board and committee member for the Ohio Recreational Therapy Association.
