Teaching Puberty With Confidence

This comprehensive course is designed to empower educators with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to teach puberty and sexual health effectively. Throughout these sessions, you'll discover practical strategies, inclusive approaches, and thoughtful resources to create positive learning experiences for all students. This course emphasizes respectful communication, age-appropriate content, and creating safe spaces for young people to learn about their changing bodies. Whether you're a new or experienced educator, these materials will help you navigate this important topic with clarity and compassion. At the completion of this course, participants will need to pass an exam with a minimum score of 80%. Participants must complete the course within 365 days of starting the course to receive a completion certificate.

Course Objectives

  • Identify and implement developmentally suitable learning objectives for puberty education across grade levels.

  • Create and maintain a classroom climate where all students feel safe, respected, and comfortable discussing sensitive topics.

  • Apply teaching approaches that respect and include students from all backgrounds, identities, and learning needs.

  • Effectively utilize quality educational resources including 3Rs curriculum and Amaze.org videos to enhance student learning.

  • Develop skills to respond to student questions with accurate, respectful, and age-appropriate language.

Instructor Bio:

Matt Hagedorn brings over 20 years of middle school health education experience from Tallmadge, Ohio. His classroom expertise provides a foundation of practical, tested approaches to puberty education. With degrees in Health Education and Evaluation & Measurement from Kent State University, Matt combines theoretical knowledge with practical classroom application. Named 2023 Ohio Health Teacher of the Year, Matt actively participates in SHAPE Midwest and OAHPERD Advocacy Committee to promote effective health education.
