Using Social Emotional Learning and the Sport Education Model to Teach Flag Football

This CEU course introduces educators to the integration of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) within the Sport Education Model, using a football unit to illustrate practical application. Participants will learn to explain the key features of the SEM and understand how it differs from traditional physical education instruction, with emphasis on season structure, student roles, team affiliation, and authentic competition. The course highlights how the SEM naturally supports SEL, such as teamwork, leadership, and self-management and guides educators in developing strategies to intentionally embed these competencies into daily lessons. By the end of the session, participants will be equipped to identify multiple ways to incorporate SEL and design a football unit that fosters skill development, positive team culture, and holistic student growth. At the completion of this course, participants will need to pass an exam with a minimum score of 80%. Participants must complete the course within 365 days of starting the course to receive a completion certificate.

Course Objectives

  • By the end of the session, participants will be able to explain the key features of the Sport Education Model and summarize how it differs from traditional physical education instruction.

  • Participants will be able to identify at least three ways the Sport Education Model supports social-emotional learning (ex. teamwork, leadership, self-management) and develop strategies to intentionally incorporate SEL into physical education lessons.

  • Participants will be able to identify football instructional practices that demonstrate the Sport Education Model in action.

Instructor Bio:

Heather Barbour is a Kent State University graduate and has taught K–5 elementary physical education for 15 years. A passionate advocate for lifelong fitness, she has been involved with OAHPERD for 19 years, serving on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee, and was honored as the 2025 OAHPERD Elementary Teacher of the Year. Beyond teaching, Heather serves on her city’s Recreation Board, promoting family activity and biking in the community. She and her husband love keeping up with their three kids and are always looking for fun, active ways to spend time together.
