Adding Bike Riding Into Your Kindergarten PE Curriculum

*This course has been pre-approved by OAHPERD for 5 clock hours.

This course provides an overview of how and why you should add bike riding into your current kindergarten physical education curriculum. The course explores the need for teaching bike riding in physical education classes to your kindergarten students. It includes ideas for funding the program, introduces the All Kids Bike program, equipment, safety, risk considerations, curriculum and development community outreach, after school programing and resources. At the completion of this course, participants will need to pass an exam with a minimum score of 80%. Participants must complete the course within 365 days of starting the course to receive a completion certificate.

Course Objectives

  • Learner will be able to identify at least 3 barriers students face when it comes to learning to ride a 2-wheel bicycle and identify solutions to help remove barriers and address why learning to ride a bike in physical education class is a solution.

  • Learner will be able to identify at least 2 reasons why learning to ride a bike using a balance bike is better option than using training wheels.

  • Leaner will be able to identify at least 2 funding opportunities to start a learn to ride and/or implementing the All Kids Bike Program into their physical education program.

  • Learner will be able to identify at least 3 safety considerations during the implementation process of the All Kids Bike program.

  • Learner will be able to identify at least 3 key factors a rider needs to be able to do before they are ready to add pedals to their bikes.

Instructor Bio:

Lauren Wilson is an Ohio certified physical education and adapted physical education teacher, 2023 OAHPERD Elementary PE Teacher of the year currently teaching for the Twinsburg City School District in Twinsburg Ohio. She holds a Bachelors of Science from Kent State University and a Master’s in Adventure Educations from Plymouth State University. Currently, Lauren teaches preschool, kindergarten, 1st grade, and high school adapted physical education. In 20 years of teaching, she has taught both in private and public schools teaching all age ranges. She has presented at the local, state and national level. Lauren has a passion for creating lifelong movers and encouraging her students be the best versions of themselves.
