Social Emotional Learning in Physical Education

*This course has been pre-approved by OAHPERD for 5 clock hours.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) in Physical Education focuses on integrating SEL principles into PE to support students’ emotional well-being, teamwork, and personal growth. This course will guide learners in understanding the basics of the Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR) model and how it serves as a foundation for embedding SEL within the PE classroom. At the completion of this course, participants will need to pass an exam with a minimum score of 80% to receive CEU’s. Participants must complete the course within 365 days of starting the course to receive a completion certificate.

Course Objectives

  • Learners will understand the basics of the five levels of the Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR) model and how it serves as a foundation for Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) in Physical Education.

  • Learners will be able to identify CASEL’s 5 core competencies essential for social and emotional learning.

  • Learners will be able to explain benefits of SEL in the physical education classroom.

  • Learners will be able to connect SEL competencies to the 2024 SHAPE America national standards.

  • Learners will be able to identify 5 teaching strategies to incorporate SEL into their classroom.

Instructor Bio:

Kathy is an experienced elementary physical educator recently retired after 30 years of teaching. She has a passion for inspiring children to stay physically active for a lifetime. Kathy, affectionately known as "Coach Casper," inspired her students to cultivate a growth mindset and to learn and lead with kindness and respect both within and beyond the classroom. In addition to her teaching, Kathy has shared her expertise by presenting at OAHPERD state conference, professional development sessions, Summit County ESC, and most recently, SHAPE America’s national conference in Cleveland. She loves encouraging children to recognize their possibilities and believe in themselves. In her spare time, Kathy enjoys spending time with her family and embracing the outdoors through hiking, biking, and traveling.
